:::Organization
Geological Information Division
Before starting a field geologic survey, it is advisable to conduct a thorough reference search. Also, results of surveys or investigations should become immediately available to the general public so as to provide information for the nation's development and major engineering projects. Acquisition and management of geological literature, publishing of geological results, collection and exhibition of rock and mineral samples and construction and maintenance of computer information system thus become important function of the Geological Information Division.

PUBLICATIONS OF RESULTS OF GEOLOGIC SURVEY AND RESEARCH

The library is an important facility of the Survey, which houses a vast collection of geological information, texts and journals that may not be available in other libraries of this nation. Currently, there are 10,000 volumes of professional geological books, and over 150 different geological periodicals, both domestic and international. There are also over 100 exchange publications from foreign institutions. Part of the valuable collection of this library is old geologic literatures including geologic papers, dissertations and maps from all available sources within the Taiwan area. To facilitate management of the vast collection, the library has been computerized. The librarians manage the ever-growing collection through computer processing, and readers can have immediate access to this collection through the intranet system. Besides offering services to the entire staff in the CGS, the library also provides information for other individuals that request such service.

GEOLOGICAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Publications of CGS.
Results from geologic surveys and research should be published promptly for effective application to the nation's economic development and major construction projects. Central Geological Survey also invites and procures results from experts and scholars from other institutions for publication. CGS publishes bulletins, special volumes, Geology (periodical in Chinese), geologic quadrangle map sheets, annual report, and investigation reports for special projects in applied geology. Furthermore, to provide reference for geoscience education and academic research, CGS has also invited scholars to write a series of books on the geology of Taiwan.
Types of publications:
  1. Bulletin of the Central Geological Survey
  2. Special Publication of the Central Geological Survey
  3. Annual Report of the Central Geological Survey
  4. Geology (in Chinese)
  5. Serial publications on the Geology of Taiwan
  6. Geologic Features of Taiwan
  7. Introduction to the Geology of Taiwan (Explanatory Text accompanying the Geologic Map of Taiwan)

CONTRUCTION AND MAINTENCE OF COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEM

To keep up with the global computerization, the construction and maintenance of computer information system is another important function of the Geological Information Division. The main tasks include the construction and maintenance of an internet and intranet system, geologic map digitizing system, computerized document system, digital topographic map and satellite images data, automatic library management system, and the WWW website (Web Site: http://www.moeacgs.gov.tw/).

COLLECTION AND EXHIBITION OF GEOLOGIC SAMPLES

A small geologic museum was set up in 1995, which displays various types of rocks and minerals mainly from Taiwan while a few are abroad. All the samples are grouped into 24 topics for exhibition, among those the following are the most important: The Geology and Image of Taiwan, The Metamorphic Rocks of Taiwan, The Igneous Rocks of Taiwan, The Sedimentary Rocks of Taiwan, The Metamorphic Minerals of Taiwan, The Beauty of Minerals in Taiwan, The Ore Minerals of Taiwan, The Fossils of Taiwan, The Ore Minerals of Overseas and The Rocks and minerals of Overseas. Most of our visitors are students from the primary and junior middle schools from nearby areas. The major objective of the Geologic Museum is to supply education material of earth science for ordinary people.
