What is the difference between “marble (rock)” and “marble stone”?

  1. Marble commonly refers to “metamorphic crystalline limestone” composed of “calcite” and “dolomite”. People often call it “marble stone” in Taiwan.
  2. The official names thereof in petrology are “marble” and “dolomite”, whereas “marble stone” is not the scientific name thereof.
  3. “Metamorphic limestones” consist mainly of calcite are petrologically called “marble” or commonly called “marble stone”. “Metamorphic limestones” consist mainly of “dolostone” are petrologically called “dolomite”.
